There was a lot of talk that after a fantastic start last week they wouldn’t hang on. It was a close run thing, but we’re delighted that California metal group Avenged Sevenfold have achieved a historic UK album chart number one position with their new album Hail To The King (released through Warner Bros Records). In the end, Avenged Sevenfold beat their closest competition Naughty Boy’s Hotel Cabana by just over 1,000 copies, with the winning total being 21,147 to 20,125. This is an amazing achievement as metal bands getting to number one in the UK charts the last few years have been few and far between, with only legends of the genre Black Sabbath (13), Iron Maiden (The Final Frontier) and Metallica (Death Magnetic) matching the feat in recent times.

Avenged’s guitarist Zacky Vengeance gave some feedback to the news on behalf of the band:

“It has been a hell of a ride thus far and having our first Number 1 album in the UK is a monumental achievement for our fans and us. I remember playing the 100 club to prove to our fans we were willing to start from the ground up again to earn your respect. Thank you for putting heavy metal back on the throne. We look forward to growing old with you.”

Avenged Sevenfold’s success is not just confined to the UK, with the band achieving the equally impressive feat of topping the US Billboard Top 200 Album Charts. Hail To The King sold 159,000 copies in the US last week to sit atop their album chart for the second time, having got there with previous album Nightmare (which sold 163,000 copies in it’s first week of release). Other chart positions will continue to roll in in the days ahead but in the band’s two primary markets, things couldn’t have gone better for them. Avenged Sevenfold were also recently announced to headline the Soundwave touring festival in Australia, alongside Green Day, so it’s a pretty exciting time for the A7X camp at the moment.
