So, no one saw this coming but what a wonderful surprise it was! A few days ago it was announced that the hallowed Donington Park turf that houses the Download Festival would in 2016 house a WWE wrestling ring in addition to the approximately 100 bands who will play the multiple stages of the festival. That’s right, NXT is coming to Donington!
It has been confirmed that WWE NXT Superstars such as Finn Balor, Samoa Joe, Bayley, Shinsuke Nakamura and many others (exact lineup TBC and subject to change) will be grappling on all three days of the 2016 Download Festival. A special purpose built NXT mini arena will be erected somewhere inside the festival, in what will be a dream marriage of Wrestling, rock and metal that many would have dreamed about for years. The fact that NXT is currently held in higher regard by many than the main WWE roster only adds further appeal to this latest development.
Those WWE Superstars will join the likes of Rammstein, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Nightwish, KoRn, Deftones, Megadeth, Disturbed and many, many more in appearing at Download 2016. We know how many wrestlers love their rock and metal, so who knows, you might find yourself watching Black Sabbath stood next to a WWE champion of the future. We also wonder if the boss of NXT, none other than The Game himself, Triple H, might make an appearance during the tribute to his good friend Lemmy in what was Motorhead’s main stage spot on the Friday of the festival. Whether this comes to pass will of course be revealed in early June at Donington Park.
