Municipal Waste are somewhat of a Ronseal band, in that they do exactly what it says on the tin. Brash aggro thrash played at the speed of light purpose built to crush skulls and kill brain cells.
Electrified Brain starts aptly enough with the title track. After the sound of electricity fizzles out the track explodes in the listeners face like a counter attack from a pissed off Pikachu.
The next 30 odd minutes of no frills thrash brilliance feel like being fed a lifetime supply of Monster, blindfolded then told to run through a field of landmines. Explosive, adrenaline pumping and more than a bit disorientating.
Grave Dive, High Speed Steel & Crank the Heat are old school bangers the scene was founded on. Short, sharp, shocks to the system designed for rooms full of dudes in denim and leather to headbang their faces off to.
Restless and the Wicked has a really great gallop to it, feeling like the four horsemen (not those ones) are riding in to have a little mosh. Paranormal Janitor is genuinely ludicrous, it’s pure speed. It’s an impressive way to close the album ensuring it goes out with a nuclear level bang.
Look, I don’t need to sit here waxing lyrical about what you’re going to hear on a Municipal Waste record. They are so far into this now, and have proved they aren’t interested in reinventing the wheel, hell they don’t even want to put tyres on the existing ones.
This is 35 minutes of pure unfiltered high speed party thrash by one of the most consistent bands in the game. If you want pure ragers, the likes of which The Beastie Boys could have made a career off of had they fought a little harder for their right to party, Municipal Waste is that band and Electrified Brain is that album.
Electrified Brain is out now via Nuclear Blast
