Bloodbath – Survival Of The Sickest

BLOODBATH are one of the most legendary bands in the history of death metal. Featuring an eye watering array of collective talent in their ranks, they have slashed their way through the scene with gruesome precision for over two decades now.

Survival Of The Sickest is their sixth studio album and the follow up to 2018’s The Arrow Of Satan Is Drawn. Don’t worry though, time has not dulled their edge. This is still the sound of a band at their most brutal and uncompromising. The sheer savagery on display is simply astounding. No gimmicks needed, this is pure unfiltered death metal at its most frenzied and grotesque. You’ll walk away from listening to this album feeling you have been forced to walk through a zombie infested hell while wearing concrete shoes.

The opening triumvirate of Zombie Inferno, Putrefying Corpse, and Dead Parade hit like several sledgehammer blows to the cranium. Each one progressively heavier and nastier than the last. Carved feels like a demented cousin to the band’s classic Eaten. It’s a sinister sidewinder of a track that will surely snap some necks when played live.

The latter half of the album houses some of the album’s most impressive moments. The apocalyptic nightmare that is Affliction Of Extinction and the punishing assault of Environcide. Both of which paint extremely visceral and frankly disturbing images of the future.

The Nick Holmes era of BLOODBATH continues to come out swinging. Three albums with him at the helm, and not a dud in the pack. His vocals on here are a career highlight and he flexes his vocal muscles with an intense and layered performance. The current lineup of the band is firing on all cylinders, delivering not only an album befitting their own legacy, but one that stands as the blueprint for the whole scene in general.

BLOODBATH are still a truly innovative and exciting band, operating at a level many others could only dream of. They remain one of the leaders of their scene and a band that may truly be peerless.

Survival Of The Sickest releases September 9 via Napalm Records.
