Album Review: Killswitch Engage – This Consequence

Killswitch Engage are one of the most influential bands in modern metal. Their importance to the scene cannot be understated. So naturally whenever they have new music on the horizon, there is always a certain level of anticipation. Its been 6 years since their last full length 2019’s Atonement.

This Consequence sees the Massachusetts Maestros at their most focused and unrelenting. There is not an inch of fat on this album. It’s a spring loaded, tightly paced collection of instant classics. Whether it’s the hail of machine guns drums that usher in album opener Abandon Us, the all out thrash assault of Discordant Nation, or the sumptuous melodies that fill the choruses of Aftermath and I Believe, Killswitch Engage have come out swinging.

At a point career wise when most of their peers would start taking a backseat, Killswitch have taken their time, got their heads down and crafted something that is worthy of their legacy.  The album’s back half houses some of the strongest material the band has ever written. Where it Dies is a classic KSE stomper, The Fall of Us flirts with Death Metal recalling Adam D’s side project Serpentine Dominion. Broken Glass is a doomy blast of brutality. Requiem is a KSE anthem for the ages and sees the album off in triumphant fashion.

Jesse Leach once again cements his place as one of the most versatile voices in Metal. His performance on this album is nothing short of spectacular. Effortlessly moving from anguished screams, death growls and choruses that could level buildings with ease. He continues to not only raise his own game, but elevate everything else around him.

This is the most immediate, locked in and alive Killswitch Engage have sounded in quite some time. This Consequence is the sound of a band who knows exactly what they are doing and have perfected their craft. This is an incredible statement of intent that should not only make everyone else take notice, but it should once and for all confirm their status as one the best bands to ever do it.

This Consequence is out via Metal Blade Records on February 21st. For more information & pre orders head here
