Anyone who’s been even a semi-regular visitor to Rock Sins over the last few years knows we are big fans of As Everything Unfolds (8). The first UK headline shows in far too long from the Buckinghamshire five piece were announced at the end of the Summer, and happily we were able to get along to see them show, once again, why they’re one of the best young heavy bands in the UK.
As things are set to kick off, The Dome in Tufnell Park is nice and busy. We would have loved to have seen it full, but amidst the near endless tours hitting the capital at this time of year and a continuing cost of living crisis, it’s a good turn out, and those here are in very good voice. It’s a good sign for As Everything Unfolds that they choose to start with the first of their recent new songs, Set In Flow, and the overwhelmingly majority of the crowd holler the chorus straight back at frontwoman Charlie Rolfe.
There’s a really nice balance to the evening. The setlist mixes up well from across AEU’s back catalogue. An early run of Felt Like Home, Saint or Rogue and Hiding From Myself goes down a storm. A social media fan vote resulted in not only 17:10 but Wither being brought out for rarely heard airings; The former being lots of fun and the latter is a stunning vocal performance from Charlie which closes the main part of the set. Louis Doran holds things down behind the drum kit like he’s been there a lot longer than he has. Adam and George are their usual efficient selves on guitar and bass respectively, and Jon Cass, is of course, Jon Cass (IYKYK).
While there’s many things to love about As Everything Unfolds‘ varied sound, they’re often at their best when they lean into their nu-metal influences. Thus, to the surprise of no one, Flip Side sounds absolutely massive and has the circle pit to match. It’s a performance that wizzes by all too soon, and before we know it, it’s time for the encore. And what an encore! Ultraviolet and of course On The Inside back to back is a wonderful way to finish an As Everything Unfolds show.
AEU are a fantastic band who deserve to be heard, known and loved by even more people than they currently are. The (as yet not fully announced but is definitely coming) third album will hopefully propel them to the greater heights they deserve. In the meantime, we suggest you give them a follow on Instagram!
