Bristol natives downcast have been busy over the last few weeks. They’ve released not one but two new singles, and stylistically they are about as different as they could get.
First up, falling to pieces is the most personal song the band have ever released. Written about frontman Liam Edwards‘ little brother passing away due to complications from alcoholism, this song will hit anyone who has lost someone hard, especially if it was in similar circumstances. Here’s Liam to explain more:
‘falling to pieces’ is about my little brother who passed away last September at the age of twenty-eight. He struggled with severe alcohol addiction for a long time, which eventually caused fatal medical complications.
The song was written during a time of confusion, before we understood exactly what took him from us. All I knew was that nothing could change what had happened. The song captures the anger and frustration I carried while learning to accept this.

The complete opposite to falling to pieces, their second new single brainless dropped a couple of days ago. Going from intensely personal to intensely political, brainless is a firm kickback against right wing narratives in the media and on social media. While downcast are best known for songs like falling to pieces, brainless sees them channelling their inner Rise Against to help fight against some of these, well, brainless messages. Check out the lyric video for brainless below:
Coming up in the next few days, downcast will be showing off their two new singles on the road. Their first UK headline tour in some time kicks off August 25th in London at the New Cross Inn. This is the first of six dates that sees them hitting Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol as headliners, before swapping places with support band Stay Safe for the final two shows in Manchester and Huddersfield.
